Just Thinking
I tried to get ahead last week and wrote my blog early…too early. As events unfolded this past week I realized that what I wanted to share was not going to be what we need this week. I am as stunned as everyone and sad and worried and wondering. When that happens to me I know I need to be in prayer longer, listen more deeply and do some self reflection.
I have been reading a book this week “The Art of Gathering” by Priya Parker. There are some truths in it that can anchor us today in what we should do, how we should go forward and what it will take to help mend divisions. It’s in the way we gather. For many of us, gathering for mass or services on the weekend was predicable. No surprises - unless they were anticipated - holy days, holidays, feast days and days that mark the beginnings and ends of liturgical seasons. We know when to gather and how to gather for these things. But there can be more. Each time we gather - no matter if it’s virtual or in person, can be a time to go much deeper with our relationships, conversations and expectations. That is what will make the gatherings worthwhile, memorable and powerful.
I believe that this time in our history, in our lives is calling forth something from us. I believe and say often that we are only called to take care of what is at the end of our noses. What is in our circle of influence. So, knowing that, how can we change the narrative and conversations around us? How can we move from me to we? Our Catholic faith reminds us that we don’t find salvation on our own, it’s done in community and as messy as that is, it is us. So, how do we rectify things in ourselves and our communities that may not reflect the message of the Gospel? How do we even assess that, talk about it and then seek to change?
This is not about politics, but about my neighbor. It’s about those with whom God has entrusted me to love and serve - bearing witness to the one who has transformed my life.
So this week, let’s begin with ourselves. Do a little inventory of our hearts, asking God to shine a light on the areas of our hearts that needs healing, reconciliation, grace and forgiveness. Only then can we move out and do the work we have been given. This is brave work. Tough work. Necessary work. We are to be kingdom builders - ones who offer hope, life, light, grace and mercy. I want to do that. Join me this week in self reflection and a simple prayer. “ Lord, what will you have me do? Here I am.”
