Advent Lights Our Lives

Advent Lights Our Lives

I was out for a walk today and noticed that people have been busy decorating their homes for Christmas. There were inflatables, nativity sets, snowmen, sleds, candy canes and lights galore. I love it. I don’t do it, but I love that someone loves to do this. The twinkling lights can’t help but make us happy.

When we take the time to put something in our windows, on our houses or lawns, fences and porches - it’s not so much for us - but for others. It is a gift of hospitality to all who will see it. Lights are a beautiful way to remind us that Jesus is the light who has come into the world to overcome darkness. This year more than ever we are feeling that darkness. The coronavirus has been like an eclipse at times - covering up the light - making us have to work to find it. The numbers of those with the virus, hospitalized, or dying is staggering. And it’s taking a toll.

My daughter Jess called on her way home from work last night. She is an RN at a VA hospital. She cried as she talked about the patient who died on her unit, in her care, just an hour earlier and the two others who might not make it through the night. My heart ached for her. I listened. I reminded her that her team always does their best - they love what they do, and treat each person with dignity, excellent care and so much compassion. The virus is relentless and yet, she and her team go in each day to do what they’ve been called to do. We talked until she pulled into her driveway and we said our good-byes and “I love you’s”

I cried after that call. I wished I was there to sit with her, give her a hug and make her a cup of hot cocoa. I had been sitting at the kitchen table where the Advent wreath is. I took few minutes to look at it - really look at it. Isn’t it incredible that God cares for each of us…loves us as we are…promises us hope, joy and all that in abundance? Emmanuel - God with us - was just the reminder I needed. God is here, in the midst of the pandemic and knows our hearts. He comes into the world for us and we must in turn share the light of Christ with others. Doctors and nurses are the light these days. No matter how they feel, what their politics or faith, they serve their communities each day and bring hope.

I am grateful for all the sources of light we find around us - those crazy lawn decorations, those serving us in the medical field, friends, family and the Advent wreath too. This week - be a light to someone - a sign of God’s grace in the world. Put a light in your window or add a string of lights to your front door.

I pray that you have light in your life this week - in abundance! You are loved!

Peace,

Jane
